Summary Iron deficiency and iron overload are both associated with bone loss and an increased risk of fracture, which markedly limit mobility and autonomy of affected individuals. Thus, iron levels must be balanced to maintain health in general, and in particular bone strength. The DFG-funded FerrOs consortium (FOR 5146) brings together experts of iron and bone metabolism to decipher the underlying mechanisms of iron regulation and its interactions with bone. Funded by

New publication by FerrOs researchers!

We proudly present the new article by Philipp Kastl, Sandro Altamura, Martina Muckenthaler, and Ursula Klingmüller from our FerrOs Research Group on "Erythropoietin-driven dynamic proteome adaptations during erythropoiesis prevent iron overload in the developing embryo" that was just published in Cell Reports (https://www.cell.com/action/showPdf?pii=S2211-1247%2822%2901192-5).

Second FerrOs Retreat: Finally, the whole FerrOs team got together in person!

On June 29th – July 1st we met in Riederau at the Ammersee at our 2nd FerrOs Retreat. Since we were not able to meet face-to-face at our 1st retreat, we were all more than happy to get together in real life and listen to the presentations of our eight FerrOs projects.

April 23 is International FOP Awareness Day 2022!!

Since the University of Pennsylvania announced their breakthrough discovery of the FOP gene ACVR1 at April 23, 2006, this date is now celebrated as International FOP Awareness Day! This year marks the 16th anniversary of the discovery of the FOP gene meaning 16 years of hope, progress and determination to find a cure.
